Brett Hull’s controversial triple-overtime goal for the 1999 Stanley Cup deserves a deep rewind

  • In game six of the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals, the Buffalo Sabres hosted the Dallas Stars and no one was aware how long of a night they were in for, or how controversial the finish would be. Both sides were seeking their franchise's first Stanley Cup. Both sides had one of the league's best goaltenders in their net. But only one side had Brett Hull.

He was the final piece in a massive makeover the Stars had gone through since their arrival in Dallas a few seasons earlier. Along with Mike Modano, Jere Lehtinen, and Joe Nieuwendyk, Hull was in good company when it came to scoring goals. But tonight, and this whole series, it was tougher sledding thanks to Dominik Hasek. That isn't to say it was all smooth sailing for the Dominator; Hasek just wouldn't be rattled regardless of the weapons he faced. Outside of game two, he was giving up less than two goals per game. The trouble was his offense faced just as tough of a test when trying to get pucks past Belfour.

So in triple-overtime, still tied at 1-1, Hull gave us a moment in history that is still held onto by both franchises - just for polar opposite reasons.

    Corrections/errors
    5:07 - Sabres were 7th seed, not 6th seed
    8:57 - Lehtinen, not Nieuwendyk

Change the intro to "if Dallas wins, they win be headed to
Vinnie Paul's house to party with strippers and a cases of crown Royal where the cup will get thrown off his balcony and get a big dent in it".
    RIP Vinny and Dimebag!!!

The worst part of this whole thing is that they called that damn " Skate In the Crease" rule super tight that ENTIRE year.
I'd love to see how many times it was called across the leauge through out the season cause it was definitely a ton of them. The top rule makers n the NHL told all the referees to keep a very close eye on it & call it everytime.

So for that to happen all year long & then have the season end in triple overtime on a goal where the skate was in the crease , no doubt about it , that just terrible.

The rule was immediately changed back to normal. That was for the better IMO. It was a terrible rule.

So, I can finally get this understood: The rule stated that if a player has possession of the puck and goes into the crease, as long as there isn't a change of possession, the goal will count. Brett Hull shot the puck and went into the crease to get the rebound. Because there was not a change of possession, Hull was able to get his own rebound and score, while inside the crease. Does this make sense? I just finally want to understand what the rules say.

Everyone in the NHL and the hockey media made such a big deal about absolutely no skates in the crease. Dominik Hasek, on the other hand, would eventually get his name on the Cup 3 years later as a member of the Red Wings...with Brett Hull as one of his teammates.

I hate to say it, as a Sabres fan, but after years of thinking this is "no goal" I've changed my mind. I don't buy the argument that after the puck touches Hasek it's still Hull's puck, no it's a loose puck at best, maybe even Hasek's puck. However, I do consider it Hull's puck when he kicks it up to his stick, and if you pause the video at the exact moment he kicks the puck, he is completely out of the crease and despite the fact that he re-enters the crease, he does so with the puck and therefore you have a good goal. For those of us that watched hockey that year, the rule was really dumb, but you got used to it, goals were disallowed all the time, it was part of the game that year. So at first it did seem like "no goal" because I had never before slowed it down to watch him kick the puck, but he does so intentionally, it's a hockey play, it didn't just bounce to him, therefore a goal.
