I really liked this movie. It's a different movie. Your thoughts on this film is what I feel towards US. Florence Pugh's emotional acting was great, but I was getting annoyed with her panic attacks. The long periods of daylight of the movie, made me feel like those anime/comic book conventions or trips to Reno or Las Vegas and how it feels not sleeping and you're running on an empty gas tank.

    • Reel James

It's definitely a different film, but it's a bad different. The more I think of Midsommar, the more I get disappointed. I loved US! It's not Get Out levels of good, but it's still among the best of 2019, no doubt.

Thank you for dropping by and watching the review! I was really just pulled out of the film by the midway point and I felt the script truly needed tinkering. There's a lot in this film, but not enough of it is worthwhile for nearly three hours of a cult festival showcase. I'm really glad you enjoyed this one, though! :D

I just saw this movie and I soundly disagree that the second half was a let down. At least it wasn't for me. I think a lot of people go into a movie like this expecting a 'surprise' or some kind of pay off or twist or to be scared like in a conventional horror film. This is not what this movie is about. It really is just an invitation to the audience to partake in a ceremony and see it to its completion. The story is with Dani and her need for emotional support. Good review anyway.

Reel James I’ve been binging all of your vids. I feel like I agree with you with everything. I just think I liked the ending more than you. She left her old toxic friends and finally found a new family who she can share emotions with and who can care for her. But yeah Hereditary 100% had the tighter script. They showed how every character grew but for this it was mostly only Dani. I just gotta say that opening scene before the title card got my heart really pumping. Got the same feel as watching Toni Collette’s screams it was really terrifying and hard to watch

    • Reel James
      Reel James   2 weeks back

@Pwnguin 3 Oh *no*, you watched THAT SCENE with your family? I'm so sorry. lol.

I'm glad you enjoyed this one! I think the reason I compare it slightly to Hereditary is because of Ari Aster's style. His script was tighter for Hereditary, which did the film justice. In Midsommar, I think he went off the rails and it didn't pay off. Still, the shots are pretty to look at and you can tell he still has that unique style of horror up his sleeve.

Thanks so much for the comments about the Channel! That means a lot to me, and honestly, I love interacting with you and everyone. Reel James I just finished. I loved it. The cinematography was amazing! The story was pretty good. I mean some of the gore was clearly dummies but it was pretty good. Not AT ALL like hereditary. I think I enjoyed Hereditary a bit more than this but really you can’t compare them that much. Florence Pugh was amazing. My biggest complaint was the characters. Connie and the other guy had barely anything to do with it and they just died without much happening, you just heard a scream. I wish they did more with them. Also, Mark died kind of too fast. We didn’t learn anything about his death. At least joshs was on screen and showed an aftermath. THAT SCENE if you know what I mean was just way too awkward for me. Because I watched it with my family...But I really enjoyed the movie and it was really good. Btw your channel is so good and I like how interactive you are with your fans.

"Weird just to be weird"? "The pay-off is not worth it"? "Nothing really worked in the second half"? Are you insane? Criticizing the pace is valid and fair but suggesting Aster was being "weird just to be weird" is an insult to a serious filmmaker and clearly indicates the movie went well over your head. The entire movie is a huge, f*cked up metaphor for the steps Dani needed to take in being able to accept that her stagnant relationship with Christian was truly over and in so doing finds a new, nurturing family unit. It's okay to admit you didn't get it. It's not okay to denigrate a talented filmmaker because the film didn't dumb itself down for you.

    • Reel James
      Reel James   3 months back

Hey, thanks for watching the review! Nope, can't say I'm insane. I don't necessarily think the film went in that direction, because I genuinely don't think this is a metaphor for anything. I think I understood the film just fine: Dani and her friends are just caught in the middle of a cult while she's dealing with relationship issues. What I can say about this one: At least it sparks discussion! Thanks again for letting me know what you think.

Get yourself a temporary assignment assisting a Medical Examiner as I did during my time at the Medical College of Virginia back in the 80's.

Then we'll have a discussion about what's "disturbing" to see and think upon. In the meantime what I find "disturbing" is the number of nitwits who swallow up this nonsense flop and then scamper about giggling OH it's SO DISTURBING i haven't SLEPT in a FORTNIGHT eek eek.

Sure right mm-hmm. Faint at the sight of ketchup do we? Give me a break...this crap-fest telegraphed every bit of suspense it could have created. Meanwhile zero explanation given for the actions of these fruitcake villagers. Yo it says here in the book of pop-up shapes you must cliff-dive at 72. Oh really? Yeah sure whatever. Here we goooooo...

Hey wait what's this insane bullshit meant to do? Oh uh grow taller wacky weed stalks yeah that's the ticket. Say what...? How about I push your old ass over instead? People are watching this and accepting it vs. asking questions as to the director's ideas and reasoning behind such ludicrous behavior. I find that VERY disturbing in this growing ever sadder day and age.

I felt the ending of Midsommar was perfect. A beautiful, cathartic frenzy of emotion that left me almost happy but then empty inside an hour after the credits rolled. I think Aster nailed the emotion of a breakup with someone you've grown codependent on, a sort of vindication or relief initially to be free, but then a lingering sense of unease and sadness that hits you later. I think this movie is substantially better than Hereditary, and Hereditary was one of my favorite films last year.

I'm more in the "gallows comedy" camp, but then I'm a hardcore fan of the Wicker Man. A lot of people in the audience laughed when I saw it. The American guests (sans Dani) were all classic Ugly Americans and completely unsympathetic. Aster said this script was inspired by a bad breakup ... He may have a hard time getting dates for a while after this. 🤔

I think the writer of this film had a bunch of disturbing imagery that they wanted to fit in, and they wrote a very flimsy plot to put it all together. There are so many things that feel added just for the shock factor alone.
The cinematography was really great however

        • Reel James
          Reel James   3 months back

Ari Aster not only directed, but also wrote the script, so yeah, he's gonna need to scale back a bit for his next film. I *totally* agree with everything you said! I think Florence Pugh and the cinematography are the only redeemable things about this movie.

I 100% agree with everything you said. I'll add that, with the exception of Dani, none of these characters felt like real people to me and I just had no interest in watching them or seeing what happened to them. They were largely cliches as well. Was super disappoined after loving Hereditary so much.

          Reel James   3 months back

Thank you for watching! I totally agree with you, too, because the character development felt...weird. No pay-off for Dani and there's clearly no interest in Christian and the gang at the end. I really wanted to love this one! I think Ari Aster should probably have someone help him with scripts. He can't put out another 2+ hour horror film.

@Reel James I couldn't tear my eyes away, nor can I get it out of my head...whew buddy 😂
I think the music during that scene had my gut in a vise grip, such a dreadful build up. If Ari Aster wanted to invoke an array of emotions (including confusion, anxiety, disgust) then mission accomplished

P.S. I'm probably gonna see it again 😂

@mariama .t. Yeah, that sequence was *tough* to get through. Had to legit turn my head away from the screen.
