September 4, 1986 Bill Buckner lets a ground ball slip threw his glove, allowing the Mets to score.

What's funny is that because people have realized it's unfair to blame Buckner for this, now you see lots of people claiming Buckner was some kind of really good player. This video, for example, insanely says Buckner was a "borderline hall of famer." No he wasn't. Buckner had 15.1 career WAR. In 1986 Buckner had a .733 OPS as a first baseman. That's terrible, even for the 80s. His best season he finished 10th in MVP voting and had an okay 3.7 WAR.

He was an average player with a few above average seasons. He wasn't even very good, much less a borderline hall of famer.

The blame for that loss is on the bullpen, particularly Stanley, and their quote unquote “Ace Closer” Schiradi (really showed how great of a closer he was in that outing by giving up those 3 runs in one inning late the game) throwing a run away on a wild pitch which put Buckner in that situation.

Buckner handled this moment--one that unfairly and inaccurately characterized his career--with incredible grace and humility. He continued to play for Boston, and, at least to my knowledge, never said a cross word about the team or Boston fans. There is so much to be learned from his example. As a Mets fan, I love that we have two Championships, albeit none in my lifetime, but I hate that it is framed so frequently through this single error rather than the factors that created the situation.

I don’t care what anyone says, even if Buckner fielded that ball, Mookie would beat Buckner and Stanley to the bag.

Little disappointed you missed this tidbit: Buckner may have suffered from a curse, but not the one you think.

Buckner wore a batting glove underneath his fielding glove. The logo on his batting glove: the Chicago Cubs.

Had it not been for the Buckner error, Dave Henderson would have been a legend had Boston won the world series. Both in the ALCS and in the Series themselves, WOW.

Bill Buckner had no place fielding being that dinged up. Manager McNamara essentially allowed a partially disabled man to play in the biggest series possible purely out of sentiment and it cost them.

And we haven't won a World Series since.
