I think that Redskins play was supposed to be a screen

It looks like it was supposed to be a screen play. The guy "hanging out" should have been thrown the ball immediately.

The Colts play was worse, only because it was a one possession game in the playoffs.

Colts play was worse bc their game was actually close. The Redskins were getting stomped out.

I the way the punter is standing and the way the offense doesnt move makes me wonder if the punter was supposed to get it with a full line of people in front to block.... idk

Pat McAfee explained the Colts play. So like they said they were trying to get too many on the field for the Patriots and what happened was that in the playbook the, for that play they said that if the guy got under center then they were going to snap the ball. Chuck Pagano forgetting this tells the guy under center to maybe try and get an offsides. Griff Whalen (the center on the play) is not looking up, so all he knows is that he is under center and snaps the ball.

It looked to me like he was supposed to throw it to the kicker who had a wall blocking in from of him ... like an advertised bubble screen

If the punter threw to the kicker immediately there are 7 players to block 5 defenders. This was drawn up well, just not executed. The Colts didnt even line up on the ball.

Zorn was playing the long game here. Why else would you bust out a trick play down 24 when you're already eliminated from playoff contention? Because A) losing is in your team's best interest to secure a better draft pick and B) by "wasting" the trick play here, there's now film, so when you bust out the same formation NEXT season in a meaningful situation, you can run the play right. It was a masterful plan... except that Zorn got fired two weeks later.

For the Colts play, the center was actually the only one who knew what he was supposed to do. In the play book it said that of the QB was in shotgun, don't snap. If the QB was under center, then snap the ball. The coach told the QB to go under center to try to catch the defense offsides, but he didn't tell the center. So the center did exactly what the play book said to do in that situation and snapped the ball. This is all according to Pat Macafee

i'm a giants fan and the giants were not prepared. on this play. the giants had 6 men in the box against a center and a TE/WR/OL in #12 . with the punter motioning out, that's 8 against 5 in favor of the redskins. Had the kicker thrown a screen pass to the left, giants would have been screwed.

I don't know, arguably the team's inability to execute the play counts for how bad a play it is. The Colts clearly lacked the discipline or preparation to handle the simple plan of "don't snap the ball," so they really had no business trying it. Add in the fact that they were up against one of the better-coached teams in football history and your judgement is even more questionable.

I was going to argue that the Colts' play was done at a time when they were still in the game (as opposed to here), but surprise is the factor to making a trick play work. Hester faked a fair catch, Knox caught and went up the sideline to score but it was called back on the most bullshit phantom holding call by Corey Graham. Would have brought the bears to within 3 points with about a minute to go and two time outs vs the Packers. Sigh.
