  • Penn told this story and it provided a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the difference between recollection/a story VS the real event as there was video of the event.

The audio at the beginning is an excerpt from episode 168 of Penn's Sunday School:

    PS
"...that's the same kind of crap... you get out of guys who were not involved and came in many years after. It's just like Tom Brokaw's book if you'll pardon the analogy here, about the best of the breed or something like that. Well, every guy who wrote his story about World War II did it fifty years after it happened. I'm a victim of the same damn thing. I tell it the way I remember it, and that's not the way it happened. I go back and I read a report that I did 55 years ago and I say, hmm, I'd better tell that story a little bit different. Well, that's human nature. You tell it the way you believe it and that's not necessarily the way that it happened. There's nothing more true than that." -Chuck Yeager, USAF officer, flying ace, and record-setting test pilot

Lol you guys are reading waaaaaaayyy too into things. What I took from this video was that the story matched the actual event, but with slight exaggeration, and the event was clearly a bigger deal to the storyteller than what is observed. We are sensitive to our own experiences. In our mind, these moments are bigger and grander than maybe the reality of the experience. That’s it.

I don't know what is grosser, the cockroaches or the description of Penn and Teller as "new wave magicians"

How do you know Penn wasn't Bullshitting for the sake of inside comedy while telling this story? Like purposely making Dave seem like an angry asshole as a friendly jab at Dave. It's not unusual for comedians to do this during interviews. I could be wrong, but the way he exaggerates Dave's anger and assholishness sounds like he's doing it on purpose. Again, I could be wrong.

That was like being told you're going to an all you can eat gourmet buffet and being given a cold hotdog instead. I suppose Penn never anticipated the internet.

Too bad Penn oversold it because I saw this when it originally aired and it was equally shocking, gross and hilarious!
The first part was funny in itself because it was clear they were being atrociously bad on purpose as the setup to something.

There's just no way that Dave wasn't told about the roaches beforehand. Robert Morton would never leave that to chance. Dave is volitile and hates surprises. I remember watching this when it first aired. I knew right away Penn's version of events was exaggerated.

Penn and Teller are really awesome, but this video is interesting. This is what I saw:

Penn's account about the lame routine and asking Dave for critique - accurate

Penn's account of kicking the hat -- Never happened

Cockroaches spilling all over Dave and his suit --- Never happened

Dave jumps up from the desk --- Accurate

Seeing tears of rage on Dave's face --- Never happened. And it took a while to get to commercial. Dave was in good spirits and seemed to take it in stride. He even joked about the bunny eating the roaches and the Raid.

Penn having cockroackes coming out of his suit --- Not visible, doesn't seem to have happened at all, he was just grabbing them and offering them to Dave. If it did, it was minimal.

At the time, nobody was ready for it, and no other act in the world would have pulled a prank like that. And anyway, the point of the story was everything that happened off-camera. It's a Dave story, not a P&T story.
