New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently announced a plan to bring congestion pricing to New York City. The goal is to raise money for the city’s crumbling public transit system and reclaim the dangerously busy city streets. But what is congestion pricing, and can it actually solve all our transit woes?

We took a look at London, a city that enacted a congestion charge in 2003, to see some of the benefits. Check out the video above to learn more.

Trains don’t get caught in traffic jams but they still choose to pay 6-14 dollars to sit on a bus for 3 hours a day round trip or pay 4 times that for gas, tolls and parking. Sounds like the problem is a lot bigger than that... If you’re just gonna say oh so what and keep doing the same old thing, then maybe it’s time to stop complaining about it.

They should exempt cab drivers, too- no? Edit: to be clear, it seems like a very good plan to me

Maybe we shouldn’t pay for driving because we already pay for all the roads, our cars, and the fuel to drive them.

Charging me more for driving when I’m already paying for vehicle registration, gas, and oh yeah taxes to fix these roads? No thanks.

... or you can just improve public transit. Metros, subways, streetcars, etc so walking and riding is the more purposeful commute than the more freedom/recreation commute the car offers. Also, you already pay for roads through taxes if not direct sales tax via tolls, gasoline, parking, etc, placing yet another tax on sales and excise just angers the people it impacts, especially those who don’t have an equal alternative.

There is a reason that people take car's instead of using public transportation. The subways and busses are filthy, crime ridden, overcrowded, slow, unreliable, and expensive. Now they expect for the people that have saved their money, purchased a car, pay for its gas, all of NY's vehicle insurance fee's and taxes and they expect us now to even pay to drive it too work! Also, think of the last time you got on the subway and was not harassed by someone that was mentally ill or the homeless. the subways are dangerous, I certainly wouldn't let my daughters ride on it. This also basically traps everyone on LI from traveling off long Island, if you wanted to drive without paying the fee you would basically drive up to CT then back down south!

Go with it. People who have cars are rich enough to pay this little congestion pricing charge. The government get more money to invest in other infrastructure for the city too.

I’m so happy New York City is moving in this direction and I hope other US cities adopt this type of pricing scheme too, particularly cities in California. Cities in America need to stop prioritizing the car and start prioritizing the people.

But the congestion charging in London has done little to reduce traffic, or improve air quality. All is does is generate revenue of the politicians. It's yet another taxation on motorists. If you want people to leave their cars at home, you need to improve public transport and make it easier/safer for people to walk and/or cycle. And even then, that won't get everyone off the roads, as some people have to drive. Also you'll still be left with lorries and vans doing their deliveries.

This amounts to a double tax, or even a triple tax, since we pay taxes on the cars themselves, when we buy them, too! This is NOT the best solution! Neither is just taking away car/truck lanes in the cities. We're onto you politicians who want to force us all to ride public transportation. Why? Because you want to control the movement of the masses. That's it, plain and simple! Freedom, please!

Lots of people live in NY without a car, mostly non-rich people. Plus roads and parking and car-centered infrastructure never pay for themselves anyway.
