The real reason both teams cooled off was the NHL. They were trying to make hockey more Disney. And they were going to impose serious fines if either teams dropped glove against each again.

I really hate Detroit. I don't think my city is "Hockeytown" but every time they say it, it is like nails on the chalkboard. I think I want to watch the Tigers lose their 100th game now.

                                          Just Wild!
Really how has no one died playing in the NHL?
Well.. the Bill Masterson Trophy is for just that.
No helmet, hit, fell. Hit his head on the ice. Died a couple days later.
Just a couple of years ago, I read about a referees death. Days after falling into the boards and hitting his head. On his opening laps of a period, presumably well wearing a helmet.
Can you image if Lemieux had been killed (so sad) by the Red Wings!
What a PR nightmare that would have been or the NHL (so sad) and a Black Spot on the NHL and hockey.
Watching this makes me think the NHL really walked a very thin line back then and it seems, it is with some very good luck that one did die in this rivalry, it was that bloody.
And just wow! Was the NHL bad at protecting its players. Thats the players job!
Well.. none the less the NHL was horrible at handing on suspensions at the wrong time to the wrong person. I know hide site is 20/20 but could a three game suspension to Kozlov, have saved Draper face? Maybe? Definitely could have saved some blood.
Anyways we will never know, I'm sure happy no one died in this rivalry and that the NHL has changed so much in the last couple of years, with more of an impetus on speed, and skill, over braun and big beef. Don't get me wrong, I love these memories, the toughness, the hits, the blood and yes speed and skill. Really I just love hockey!

I mean the same thing could be said about lemieux boarding drapers face into the bench boards. Could very well have been deadly or even left Draper paralyzed.

I have been a hockey fan my whole life and there is no doubt of the hatred between the two teams. I just cannot see how this rivalry is worse than Red Sox/Yankees. They have been battling it out for decades. Look back at the brawls they had in the 1970's and yeah, they are not going to be as nasty simply because fighting is not tolerated as it was in hockey then. The Colorado Avalanche formed in 1995, not too long ago for a franchise. If Colorado and Detroit played today, there is no where near the tension of Red Sox/Yankees. That same tension was back in 1978, 2003,2004 and as recent as last year when the Sox drubbed the Yankees. The two cities are ensconced in American history as well. There are constant comparisons of players as to who was the best. If the Sox manage to get into the playoff this year and play the Yankees, that series will be higher rated than any Col/Det game. Since there is no objective criteria to rate a rivalry, let the arguments continue.

You guys should do a beef with Patrick Roy and Martin Brodeur as Brodeur was not going to retire until he passed every one of Roy’s records as that’s how badly he hated him and both are the two best French Canadian goalies in history.

Sure, it was post "Lindros free agency drama" and guys like Rod Gilbert retiring a Ranger rather than be traded (can never forget the Eddie Giacomin return, when the Garden fans cheered for Eddie and the Wings over their own Rangers)... but growing up in the 80's and 90's as a kid with season tixs, experiencing Rangers/Islanders blood feuds first hand, the NHL has never seen the same to me with the change in style, influx of Eastern players and commercialization (mascots and knick knacks)... BUT OH THOSE MEMORIES.. WHAT A SPECIAL TIME... GREAT VIDEO

Larionov put his hand to the back of Foote's head and smashed it against the glass before the Lemieux hit. People need to stop pretending it was the worst ever cause it wasn't. Only reason it got magnified is cause the was hit where there's no glass and smashed his face on the edge. Turned into a wicked rivalry! You want pure dirty, see the Bertuzzi punch. Even the McSorley to Brashear stick thing wasn't that dirty, just unfortunate. Hockey is a sneaky, dirty sport, always has been.

That statement implies that somehow The Devils didn't so much win The Cup by being the superior team, as Detroit lost it via poor play. Fact is that the Devils largely beat The Wings at their own game. Everyone bemoans The famed trap employed by NJ back then, but if you know the game, then you know that Detroit actually employed a VERY similar defensive style called the Left Wing Lock. In fact, Bowman had been using a similar system as far back as the mid-70s when he was coaching and racking up Cups with the Montreal Canadiens. Where, as luck would have it, one of his players was none other than Devils coach, Jacque Lemaire. Lemaire, has said repeatedly that he brought the foundation of what became the infamous Devils' trap with him from Montreal. As for the 1995 Finals, the simple fact is that the Devils bought into their system to a man, and didn't stray from it. Detroit tried to open things up a bit and use the speed and skill they had in abundance to overcome the Devils' disciplined system. Then Scott Stevens gave them a lesson in why that might not be the best way to go. Detroit forwards spent the rest of the short series looking out for Stevens instead of looking for each other after that.
