What's with SB employing all these beta males who look like they're never played an organized game in any sport in their entire life?

Baseball has changed so much seeing declining attendance in msjor cities and the emotion of losing Player tragically is just gone.I remember my older brothers telling me how my pops was so upset when Munson died (we live in NYC) it seems that passionate gem is now gone and it’s just overpaid crybaby’s now.Such a shame

Lived through most of this and I’d take Munson over Fisk any day of the week. Take the pretty boy, I’ll take the tougher guy, the Captain with 2 World Championships. Heart and soul of the 70’s Yankees, there’s a reason his locker was never cleared. Munson doesn’t die in a plane crash he’s in the HOF too. He still belongs there!!!

Thurman Munson seems to be a little insecure in his own accomplishments and achievements. It's a waste of time to worry about the journey of another person.

I remember those days as a kid growing up in Brooklyn !!
Munson was better at bat and Fisk defensively . Both called a good game was a tie !!

Nobody, in the 1970's, thought Fisk was Munson's equal.

I was at the fight game in 76. Bottom line, Munson 2 Rings Fisk 0.

Al Davis and Marcus Allen. Davis put Allen on the bench for a couple years. It was good for Chiefs, when he came to KC he was fresh/healthy and hungry because Davis wouldn't let him play.

I'm old enough to have watched baseball in the late 70's, and I read a lot of sports magazines. Every fan knew of the Munson-Fish rivalry, but I had no idea that Munson was supposedly even jealous of Fisk for his looks.

Here's an unpopular opinion: Munson's tremendous home run in the bottom of the 8th of Game 3 of the 1978 ALCS versus Royals was an even GREATER home run than Fisk's epic walk-off in extra innings of Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. Why? Because the Boston Red Sox did NOT win up winning the title, while the Yankees did win the pennant and later the World Series. Also, Munson was playing in great pain and had not even hit a home run in over 50 games before hitting that incredibly clutch homer. In fact, he hit only 6 in the 1978 regular season, when he'd average about 16-18 in his previous 5 seasons. Lastly, the degree of difficulty: he hit it to the deepest part of the ballpark, to the left centerfield fence which was 430 feet from home plate. Fisk was in Boston, and he pulled it towards the Green Monster and the ball hit the foul pole around 320 feet away. There was also incredible pressure as the Yankees were trailing by 1 while Fisk was leading off an inning in a tie game. The most important home run for the Red Sox in that game was actually Bernie Carbo's three-run pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the 8th which tied the score at 6 all.

I know a lot of fans, especially Red Sox fans, will not agree. But honestly, there were other extra-inning game-winning homers in Game 6 which extended the World Series to a Game 7, and those homers were also more significant than Fisk's: Kirby Puckett in 1991 and David Freese in 2011 - because their teams WON Game 7. I think Fisk should be remembered for his skills (could even steal bases) and longevity more than for just 1 moment in his career. On the other hand, Munson to me deserves to be in the Hall of Fame despite the tragically shortened career, and his 1978 home run was *the* greatest clutch home run I have seen from a catcher. There's also Johnny Bench in Game 5 of the 1972 NLCS and Mike Scioscia in Game 4 of the 1988 NLCS, and Jim Leyritz in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series, but all those form another story.

Maybe this is just me, but while Munson was underappreciated, he wasn't exactly a paradigm of virtue. In response to being called "moody," one of his own teammates said, "Munson's not moody, he's just mean. When you're mean, you're nice *sometimes."*

I still vividly remember watching the game the day after Munson died in a plane crash. I welled up like millions of other Americans watching that broadcast. That was a sad day in my childhood and this is coming from a die hard Red Sox fan. RIP Thurman. 🕆

This story was reiterated in Thurm’s biography. Appel also claims that he was the one who told Munson about the assists stat.
