I am thinking the same thing that the hosts were: how is it that no one thought this might lead to problems?

I don’t really watch many sports other than cycling (which has plenty of weird stories), but I’ve really been enjoying this series.

However, I think the best thing about this series is that you don’t pretend you know everything. You have no problem with saying that a fan told you about something and then you made a video about it.

Grenada is pronounced (gruh-NEIGH-duh) not (greh-NAH-dah). We are not a Spanish country therefore won't have a Spanish name.

The one thing that this glosses over is that Barbados have a game left against the other side in that group (was it Costa Rica?) according to that table.

It wasn’t the end of the road if they won 2-1. All they had to do was get a win in the other game...which they still had to do anyway!

I don’t understand. They could score ONE goal to go up 3-1 and have the same goal differential, or they could score an own goal AND score a goal in extra time. Why did they need the own goal? (I guess I’m really asking how long extra time is and if it’s longer than they already had left in the game. Was the extra time continuous until someone scored, or would it ever just go to penalties?)

Being of Barbadian (Bajan) heritage, I have never heard of this event. I also would have been in university at the time so I was pretty busy not following the national team of my parents' birth. But also as a univeristy math major, I would find it totally befitting that Barbados would have gone through the permutations of scores of the game and realized this situation where they would then make the decision to play for the tie and get an extra 30 minutes to score 1 goal instead of trying to score it in the last few minutes of regulation time. Pure genius and a moment in history that makes me proud to say I am a Bajan Canadian.

barbados should have tried to score normally. they could push everyone up because they wouldn't mind conceding. if it got to the 89th minute yhen they could score an own goal. they would even get to take the kick off (which under the circumstances would be crucial)

They made the rule because if they were to have gone into overtime, Barbados would have basically lost since they can only score one goal more and that wouldn’t be enough to qualify so they basically did it so overtime wouldnt be boring

A similar dynamic happened in baseball, in the National League in 1965 (I think), in a game between STL and the MIL Braves. STL took a big lead early. Then a towering, ferocious storm approached in the 4th inning. The Braves, when they were on defense, tried to keep the game going by NOT putting batters or runners out. The let ground balls go thru their legs. They let fly balls drop. The Cardinals hitters took a few minutes to realize what the Braves were doing. When they did, they decided to not stop at bases, but to keep running around the bases, trying to get tagged out. As you might guess, it made a laughing stock of the game. It came down to one more out. One more out and the game would be an official game Finally, 3rd baseman Eddie Mathews of the Braves said, apparently, "Screw this mockery," and tagged the Cardinal runner out. The Braves then came to bat in their half of the 5th, and the Cardinals got them out, making it enough to be an official game. If not, the game would have to be replayed from the beginning, with the score reverting to 0-0. That was the reason the Braves tried this, to not let the game become an official complete game.

The irony was that the rainstorm never happened at the stadium. It passed them by. They played the whole game. STL won handily. The strategem was clever, but it failed. But it was sure a DIFFERENT sort of game.

I was in the hospital and was listening to all of this, with THREE future Hall of Fame announcers describing this mayhem - Harry Carey, Joe Garagiola, and Jack Buck.

Without the rule it would be they win the match but don't have enough points to qualify or they lose and achieve the same outcome.
