Forgot to say...I loved the bit about you applauding while another guy was storming out and swearing. What a great thing that a movie can elicit such drastically different responses. I don't think you'd get that in Spiderman or Fast & Furious.

I'm with you 100% (although I love the F&F movies!) I'd rather a writer/director swing for the fences, be true to their vision and risk alienating portions of the public rather than constantly trying to smear everything into a "four quadrant product".
I love being engaged with a movie - even if I'm engaged by actively not liking it.
I've heard a rumor that there's a Midsommar director's cut in the pipeline with an extra 30 minutes and if that's true I am totally down with that!

Love the comparison to Nicolas Winding-Refn! I think you’re totally spot on there. Personally, I loved the endings of both of his films. To me the momentum is earned. Great review!

Hi Andrew, It reminded me a LOT of the Wickerman remake! There was quite a lot of laughing in the cinema I was in. With the Wickerman I'm quite sure it wasn't the intention. In Midsommar's case, I'm not quite sure. I loved Hereditary and tried to manage my expectations with Midsommar. I don't think it's as good, but it's interesting and beautifully made. I've have had lots of conversations with my wife about it (she actually didn't like it). I guess that's really the sign of a good movie going experience.

Nice film... I still think that wicker Man did it better.

Great review Andrew! You got a lot of the things I’ve been feeling: I plan to go again to see this. I should have mentioned, with spoiler, that it would be interesting to consider what it would have been like if it had been a continuation of Dani’s trip from once she gets there - but instead wandering into the woods. I absolutely believe the movie is aster seeing it as reality though. Loooooove this movie

Not scary and slow. Probably the two biggest turn offs when describing a horror film.

Well you got me sold on going to see this

I did a LOT of acid back in the day, and also a lot of mushrooms and I've never heard the phrase 'tripping balls' before. Looking forward to seeing this movie. If people are hating it then I'm attracted to it. I can't help it. It's in my nature.
By the way I rewatched Nosferatu The Vampyre again tonight. Have you reviewed that? Also Shadow of the Vampire is fantastic.
One last thing... Climax is an amazing movie if you've not seen it. That's a pretty accurate representation of a trip. A very bad one. Superb.

I;ve been craving Eggers' Nosferatu since that was mooted! Bizarrely I actually HAVE done a video for Nosferatu a Venezia which I know as Vampire n Venice.

Grumpy Andrew's Horror House that's a really good question. Its relative box-office failure would suggest not. For the likes of us though, there's so much to enjoy in that movie. It's both hilarious and somewhat terrifying. Great score too. Nosferatu a Venezia is a kind of distant sequel to Herzog's film which I saw years ago but can remember little about now. Maybe I was drunk. But I read there's another remake due directed by Robert Eggers who made the fantastic The Witch - so that's something to look forward to.

Thanks very much indeed, Overlord :)
Count Orlock genuinely terrifies me...and I'll be honest there are times when Kinski terrifies me in his Nosferatu. Tell me, do you think 'Shadow of the Vampire' can possibly be an entertaining watch for anyone not familiar with Murnau's film (or indeed a passing knowledge of Murnau himself)?

Grumpy Andrew's Horror House it was the Herzog one I watched. I love it. But I love the original more. I have the original on a dvd and it’s in two versions - one in sepia and one in black and white, although the black and white one is described as the ‘silver’ version, which is somehow a wonderful description.
              Love the channel, mate.

Great review and I can't wait to watch this film! Dare I say Ari and Eggers have ushered in a new Horror renaissance? Really looking forward to seeing The Lighthouse as well. Besides those two, are there any other modern horror directors you recommend to someone who is a fan of Argento, Carpenter, Hitchcock, Bava etc? I also love Japanese horror like Jigoku and Cure.
