Didn’t the oilers break that rule after that happened? Or am I crazy? The QB dropped the ball on the ground and the lineman carried it in for a TD.

The only reason it became a rule was because it won the game. In 1972 against the Steelers in the playoffs, Stabler appeared to try something just like it but the Steelers recovered the ball. The play bent the living hell out of what is considered a fumble, what is a forward pass, what is possession, and so on. Oakland simply pulled off an unheard of sandlot type of play and made it look like they were just as frazzled as the Chargers were. I honestly believe they practiced this as it happened.

I wonder why the rule don't apply only to fumbles where the ball is advanced by the rolling on the ground - it would not apply to the Green Bay as that was genuine fumble yet still they were punished for some shenanigans which occurred many years prior...

There is no advantage by fumbling it back or to the side - you can freely toss it to those directions anyway and with much more control

I'm not understanding, Rodgers fumbled from the 2-3 yard line. The rule says you can not advance the ball unless you are the one who fumbled. He should be able to return it to that point though. So should be a safety because he didn't get out not called dead where recovered. On second thought that's a backwards fumble and should be a live ball under any rule.

Intentional backwards fumble is just a backwards lateral though. It's stupid that they count it down when someone else picks it up after that.

I'm still not convinced that the fumble was deliberate, at least it wasn't planned. It may have been deliberate at the very last moment when he realized he had to do something and it looked like a pitch to the lineman or something, but I really don't think this was some designed play. It it were designed it was poorly executed even by 70s standards. It was just the luckiest stupid thing to happen at that moment.
