Hey guys! SO MANY GREAT COMMENTS IM OVERWHELMED! You all have shared such great information about details in the film I completely missed!
Just wanted to say YES I totally misread the pubic hair on the towels! makes sense now! I feel like I kept trying to read into things being more disturbing than they were haha! Also, they weren't underwater at the start it was showing the first suicide! CRAZZYY!

When you watch it again (which I'm sure you will) the scene where Christian finds a hair in his pie will make more sense!

"Midsommar" is the WTF movie of the year. And unlike you Emma, I found the music and singing to be irritating, and not at all soothing. Otherwise, I really enjoyed this movie, even though there is a gaping plot hole that I will reveal if asked. Keep on doing that thing you do.

I actually had SUCH a similar reaction to this film and the person I saw it with was like "whaaaaaaat?"

Just saw it, I feel like my inability to set aside the core character perspectives and questioning why they did what they did from a rational standpoint took me out of the film more than usual. I think that's why, while very similar to Hereditary conceptually it fell a bit flat for me in comparison. Everything the characters did that was "questionable" in Hereditary I understood more both emotionally and logically.

Whereas I couldn't stop thinking two highly educated people within thr group actually having Midsommar culture as subject of their thesis should have probably been more interested in what was going on and asked more questions. Plus in Hereditary the cult aspect was in the background whereas this was fairly obvious. I still enjoyed the acting, character arcs, scenery, soundtrack a lot though. I would have probably enjoyed this more if I saw this first and Hereditary second so I wouldn't be comparing the two so much. Loved the review though your insights did fill in some gaps for me. Going to watch again will probably enjoy it more.

Great cinematography but Hereditary was obviously based on Rose Mary's baby and thr Exorcist and Mid Sommer was a rip of the Wickerman. Some shot for shot in the later. Was not scared by either movie. We joke the director's next film will be a remake of a cross dressing 'Psycho' motel owner that gets stabby with his guests in the shower . and thr director will title it: " Momma's boy" ! Lol

I'm so sick of the film distribution here in Mexico.
Midsommar will premiere on September 20 and I just cannot wait. I've already watched a lot of spoilers, so I don't care if I know the whole plot with details.
Glad that you could still avoid some spoilers and I'm happy that you could watch it.

Finally saw this! I need to watch it again but gonna wait for the directors cut. I did feel like some things were missing. Why the girlfriend was THAT mad at him at the dinner table when she mentioned he would leave her there alone too like the other guy.

Nice review, Emma! I'm glad you were finally able to watch this one! I definitely agree that this is a movie that takes a little bit of time to sink in. The attention to detail was great and I also really loved the dual-meaning of 'midsommar' itself. We've got the midsommar festival which is the catalyst for everything, but since this story is truly focused on our main characters and their own personal issues with relationships, growing up, etc. there's also a connection there as well. This Swedish community relates a person's life to the seasons: 0-18 = spring, 18-36 = summer, 36-54 = fall, and 54-72 = winter. Our core characters are PhD students and in their late-20s... metaphorically, mid-summer in their lives!

The main pole shown in the film is the sign of fertility. I think that it was actually used for genital mutilation in ancient rituals but those details are a little flimsy.

Saw it last night (so waited until after to watch your video).
I'm still not really sure what to think about it, but that opening scene was hauntingly awesome. That music and everything, it was horrible in a good way.
The rest of the movie, I'm not sure. I felt very uncomfortable and awkward and a lot of the movie felt 'unfair' in a way. The main characters - just like Hereditary - never stood a chance. And while it felt like the Hereditary characters sorta had a way to figure stuff out and escape, Midsommar felt like they were in quicksand from the start and only getting more stuck.
Kinda torn between different feelings. I wanted to like it more for sure, but maybe I was just overhyped? Maybe.

Anyway, thanks for the video. Liked the little funny edits. In Dutch we also got a 'coziness' word: 'gezellig' but that's mostly about the nice feeling you get when you're with people.

It's really creepy hearing people siding with the Death Cult that manipulates everything and everyone from the start. Nothing the Cult says or does, especially to Dani, is genuine at all.

A24, Ari Aster, & Jordan Peele are completely reinventing horror, into authentic horror. I'm thankful for them!😌

                                            Moral of midsommar story:

Don't be a typical GUY dipshit & treat your girlfriend like trash...or else, karma!
Forgetting your girlfriends birthday. After years together? Really?!😳😣

That midsummer solstice motif in the theatre looks great.
SPOILERS: I really liked Dani's arc, and I think the marketing really helped it. From the poster and trailer, you think that she's terrified by the cult, but when you watch the movie it's the opposite. The only people she connects with are the people within the cult and that makes the ending surprisingly happy.

SPOILERS: does anyone have thoughts on my theory that the events at the cult meeting are Dani's dream, provoked by her grief and magic mushrooms? The place was obviously not a working farm. It was a village out of a child's storybook. The artwork on Dani's walls, especially the bear picture, seems to have inspired the cult's ceremonies. And of course, all the people who were mean and dismissive of her came to bad ends, sexy Pelle gives her a big smackeroo on the lips, and somehow or other, she ends up queen. Overall, it was like the hallucination of one troubled young woman.

I can't get over how much freedom the filmmaker had, something about this felt like such new territory and I think it's going to lead to the cinematic world expanding.

A emotionally extremely involving story about a woman´s search for the right place in life after being let down and hurt by so called friends. Of course, this is all fcked up and twisted - Aster style. I loved how he showed the contrast between the two worlds: The snowy landscapes and chilling emotions in the beginning and the relaxed and sundrenched images in Sweden. Also: Florence Pugh was FANTASTIC!
                                                                        Great piece of Art!

Knowing Simon didn't leave his girlfriend behind but is really dead; hearing his girlfriend's distant screams, which the characters hear but dismiss in their drugged up haze ; the guy who goes off with the Swedish girl thinking he's gonna get some and we know different. All the characters are too self absorbed and stoned to realize the danger they are in. That creeped me out the most for some reason.

I absolutely loved this film from the traumatising first scene to the cathartic ending. The attention to detail is mesmerising and it's interesting to read about all the folklore the rituals are based of (there are still many cliffs in Sweden called ättestupa, road trip anyone?) Are you going to read the script now that you've seen the film? I read it after my second viewing and some things (like why especially Ulf was so angry about the sacred tree) had much more depth.
