How Game of Thrones Failed - And Why It's Our Fault!

    • Zimmit's FunHouse Adventure

Totally agree, but why did she not hate or at least have great contempt for Drogo after how she was used by him and the violent-loving ways of the Dothraki who took captives and had no problem raping the women of the attacked communities. How does she think all THOSE families feel about the mayhem and death the Dothraki bring to their peaceful lives??
I have to rewatch the first two seasons, but interested in your thoughts.

A horrible character from the start, and even in the books. Just mega-groan ever time there is a Daenerys chapter there, almost to the extent of just not reading on. So this bothers me far less than how D&D violated other characters, like Brienne, Arya, Sansa, Littlefinger, Varys, Tyrion, Jon and above all Stannis. And all of that happened years before they finally gave the inferior character of Daenerys the same incompetent treatment. It was a little rushed, but no worse than what had already been inflicted on every other character on the show. Perhaps except for Davos. Nah, he was a moron too by the end. Ned Stark and Hodor were the only two who survived the TV series without either becoming Mary-Sues or morons. Because D&D can't write. They don't understand characters or their development, they don't understand or care about themes. and therefore literary consistency. and they couldn't write dialog if their life depended on it. They cannot write, period, and I have been saying it at least since season 4. Don't understand why it took so many people so long to catch on. Or indeed what exactly they were expecting out of two untalented TV writers who can't write.

Bad pussy, anyone? I'm going for some of that bad pussy, because that's what I need. I may like good girls, but bad pussy is definitely what I need here. I'll bring you back some bad pussy as well if you want. Also weak men with angry face on will never rule Dorne again. Because we dialog real good over here!

I think you make a compelling and logic argument. I couldn't agree more. Even her reluctance to fully accept Tyrion's plan to besiege the city, it would have also caused widespread civilian deaths as Bron told Tyrion when they were defending against Stannis. Daenerys could have ended this when she first sailed for Westeros She had Yara's fleet, the fleets of Dorne and High Garden plus the one she took from the slavers, 8,000 unsullied, 40 or 50,000 Dothraki and 3 dragons, if she would have not listened to Tyrion and listened to Lady Olenea and been a Dragon and used her dragons and army to protect the fleet which would have given her the army of Dorne and safely escorted the army of High Garden to surround Kings Landing. Then Varys would spread rumors through the city and with the massed armies outside I bet the city would have surrendered.

Nah nah I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with this entire video. She's the child of a guy who was frankly badshit after all. She was always intended to have have a tragic ending to her character arc. Like father like daughter. That's the underlying theme throught the entire series. It's the reason why the name of show was changed from the books to "game of thrones." Almost everyone in the setting is a maniacal wannabe conquer. Their are very VERY few truly benevolent people in westeros. That's what makes jon snow's character so distinct. Unlike everyone else who seeks power and the privilege of sitting on the iron throne, he never wanted power. The power he wields was thrusted upon him against his will and that's partly what makes his character so likeable. Thats the whole point.

Plot Twist: Daenerys wanted to become "Mad". She planned for Jon to be angry enough to kill her. Then at her death, Drogon will burn the Iron Throne. Then afterwards, Jon will either be exiled or executed, removing the only Targaryen heir out of the picture. Then Tyrion will rise up to change the way monarchs are chosen, making the change from a hereditary monarchy to an elective monarchy.

Here, Daenerys did what she said she's going to do.

Bayley Whenray she did not see them as innocent. Not the adults anyway. She wondered why they hadn’t overthrown Cersei like the slaves of Maureen overthrew their masters. And she said she would not let Cersei use the innocence of the children of King’s Landing against her. Cersei had to go and Daenerys believed she could only rule by fear; she had no love in Westeros.

I've realized why this is such a big writing failure. They made Daenerys behave as if she were corrupted, but they didn't do the corrupting part. A character going corrupt needs 4 things:
                                          1. a goal
                                          2. to cause a significant event that results in serious consequences
                                          3. to abandon principles to achieve the goal
                                          4. either fail to achieve the goal, or achieve it and decide it isn't enough and expand the goal.

We saw Daenerys skip from 1 to 3. 2 was never fulfilled. Nothing that happened in the last season was her own doing. She wasn't going corrupt, she was traumatized. The reactions to trauma wouldn't be the same as going corrupt... so it didn't work.

What I think would have been in line with the events that happened to her would have been if she had attacked the Red Keep directly in effort to kill Cersei - one of the sources of her traumas, and a threat to her life.

THAT could have resulted in collateral damage, possibly hitting step 2 above, but her goal was achieved, and she wouldn't need to do anything further, thus wouldn't end up corrupted.

Locking away her dragons because she was so worried they would stray and kill innocents was one of the biggest reasons I can't believe she would do what she did in Kings Landing. She also made the speech before burning Sam's brother and father about how she wasn't there to burn innocents or to destroy the common people, but to liberate them. Daenerys might be vengeful and reckless at times but has ALWAYS been a woman of her word, I have trouble believing she would so blatantly go against her word out of the blue. I would however believe like you said that she would go after Cercei and probably inadvertently kill people in the crossfire.

if you think she changed, then you were not watching the entire show carefully enough. Even in the first episode, subtle clues are given to what she will do later in the series. Perhaps Martin will make that episode in his books play out with a little more literary elan, but if you think GRRM will paint her arc differently, you'll be disappointed.

Daenerys is a character I admire greatly. She fought and gained power in order to help the people that were unable to help themselves. Yes she could be a little temperamental when pushed to the limit and she could be ruthless with her enemies, but she never took it out on a person that was innocent up until Episode 5 of Season 8 where they needed her to go mad and burn everything to the ground. It makes everything worse because she went out of her way to prove that she was nothing like her father and yet going by the final part of Season 8 it was all for nothing because she was doomed to turn into her father no matter what she did. I would say that the most disgusting thing was when the show runners tried to justify this by talking about the “Chilling” reaction to the death of Viserys. She didn’t owe him anything because he abused her for many years, sold her to a man who raped her, and threatened to murder her unborn child, she doesn’t have to give him any sympathy and she was better off without him.

Burek they have a great amount of hypocrisy when comparing the Starks and Daenerys, the Starks could have been the ones to burn down King’s Landing and they would to find justification for them to do it and still be seen as heroes. But Daenerys not being sad when her abusive older brother was killed was used by them as proof that she is evil. It was very stupid.

Better ending; After the Night King takes the dragon, Bran wargs with it permanently becoming the dragon and giving it the ability to speak. This dragon is also ridden afterwards by Tyrion Lannister who is shown to be the bastard son of Rheagar and, upon finding this out from Varys, comments to Jon Snow that he always knew he was a bastard. Cersei realizes the threat and marches against the Night King along with Jaime and the others, planning to slay Danerys, Jon, and Tyrion after the battle. Cersei is instead killed by the Night King just before he attacks Arya who was about to assassinate Cersei in the heat of battle. Jon slays the Night King, defending his sister and causing Jaime to break down at not being able to save his own sister, but realizes he can still have a somewhat happy life with Brienne who will eventually become captain of the army of the North. While flying back to King's Landing, Bran destroys Euron Greyjoy's ship and the rest of the fleet disband as it burns. After settling in, Danerys hears the feats that Arya has accomplished and that Sansa has endured and instead of becoming territorial, she admires them and offers Sansa the North and Arya a set of islands (in the end the throne is still melted by Drogon at Danerys' bidding, while crying and realizing the heartache it brought) and then divides up the rest of the kingdoms to become a republic instead of a single-ruled throne so that she remains over King's Landing, renamed 'Dragon's Landing' and Tyrion finally gets the opportunity to take Casterly Rock, but refuses in the name of remaining the Acting Hand, which is the position he enjoys most in the game as it essentially has the most dynamic power. Bran's ability to speak and relate all of his information in the form of a very long-lived dragon will now serve to preserve knowledge and history and create a permanent bond with the elemental forces of dragons. The main cast gather one last time along the top of the wall at the port to Dragon's Landing and stare out into the horizon. What an amazing spectacle was this video to watch. And when i say that i mean it was utter nonsense.
A more proper defense of her would be that it was bad execution on D&D side and it didn't let the story flow natural so it would come to this conculsion rather than shoving her into this scenary of madness and destruction.
Moreover , her arc was overcoming her inner flame and drive for bloodlust ,she has had solved all her problems with fire and death regardless of the situation. Don't get me wrong idgaf about slavers or anything ,but we do learn that there were those who tried to oppose the regime so mindlessly killing them or punishing them doesn't make it right at all. She abolished slavery but what the fuck did she do about the culture? Nothing, of course and it all went downhill and the city erupted into a civil war. Daemerys couldn't fix a few cities ,how did she hope to brake a wheel which she hasn't done anything of notice to change for the better.
She wouldn't be able to deal with the seven kingdoms without pure subjugation through fear, she's very inept when it comes to diplomacy and justice.
