Midsommar was the absolute worst movie I have ever seen. It was worse than The Room.

You asked for favorite short films and I guess my answer is fairly old school with Cutting Moments from 97 and here's the link I could find for it: https://youtu.be/VHZ1OEqlPbQ

Aster NAILED the psychedelic aspects. Dani's difficult trips made me relive my own, lol. Hes way too good at creating tension/anxiety

I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned it already, but The Telephone Box from 1972 is one of my favorite short films. Anyone see it? https://youtu.be/Xso3vz63T6E

Just watched Midsommar. It's good but nowhere near as impactful as Hereditary. In fact, I kinda worry that Ari Aster is becoming too formulaic and predictable in his films. His gimmick seems to be juxtaposing scenes of serene beauty with scenes of intense and grotesque gore. I almost want to compare Midsommar as a cross between The Village and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Oh yeah, you should DEFINITELY rewatch Hereditary based on what you said. The movie has jaw-dropping new angles to it that you can only pick up on a 2nd and even a 3rd watch. Let's just say that the dollhouse motif is more literal than you might think on first viewing. Not to mention all the hidden cult members in several scenes.

I am seeing this film on Friday and am really excited for it. I know there is going to be some shockingly violent scenes, but I am wondering what type of violence I am in for so I can kinda mentally prepare myself for it. Are we talking about disgusting gore or just shocking? Is there any violent movies or scenes you could compare to the violence that will be shown in this film?

It’s fairly gory, but probably not as openly disturbing as Hereditary?

I can't narrow my favorite short films to just ONE. But There are hundreds of them on YouTube that you can watch for free, all you have to do is search. IMO, the best users that review them are Horrible Horror House and Thirdinput.

Most of the horror short films on YouTube it's Just trash. The "Fishman" the "byebyeman" the "idontknowman" it's Just bad shortfilms, the same shit over and over again. It's Just a Monster killing People with a stupid jumpscare in the end. Sorry for my poor English, i'm Brazilian.

I think a lot now are produced as kind of proof-of-concept reels for features (just one jumpscare and you're out), but plenty of the films that people have been posting in these comments buck that trend and deliver the goods.

I haven't seen it yet but from what I have seen from the trailer it reminds me of Dark Harvest and The Wicker Man (Christopher Lee version)

I saw it and I was not pleased with it. It took too much from the Wicker Man (Christopher Lee version) and Dark Secret of Harvest Home. There are only a few difference but not many. Oh and it is not the first horror film that happens in daylight. The Wicker Màn was daytime.

I’m hoping the finale of the movie isn’t a cluster of insanity that left too many unanswered questions, kind of like Hereditary, though the rest of that film is near perfection

Courtney Henley-The Ten Steps really creeped me out, especially the ending, let's just say that between The Ten Steps & the book House Of Leaves I'll never be able to hear anyone count footsteps the same way ever again. Haven't seen The Strange Thing About The Johnsons yet but having loved both Hereditary & Midsommar I'll need to check it out.

Adam Cesare — Oh man...YES YES YES. There’s a 2017(?) updated edition in Paperback/Hardcover, (it’s kind of both but you should order it now!). Klein has a new forward at the beginning of the book and in the forward he explains this edition has been re-edited because he felt like there were several grammatical issues or syntax errors, (but I just get the impression the man is nothing if not a perfectionist). Look it up on Goodreads, and you’ll the ratings and reviews and hype that made me instantly order that book and start reading it. Cheers.

I actually haven’t read CEREMONIES. But it sounds like I’d like it! Recommended?

The last 15 minutes of hereditary went completely insane with the cult. Would you say that the entirety of Midsommar is like those last 15 minutes of hereditary?

No, but I would say there's a more equal distribution of that level of hyper-visual creep?

So, kind of a cheat answer, but I'd say check out Danny Donahue's channel here on youtube. He has a bunch of fantastic horror shorts and deserve to be more well-known.

I agree 100% with your assessment of Hereditary. I thought it was very good and incredibly well made, but I also thought it took a lot of the scares from other movies as you indicated and I haven't seen anyone else make this point.

Not that I felt it was strictly unoriginal (everything takes from somewhere), just reminded me of those films I listed and a few more. But now I feel like, two movies in, I’ll better be able to place it in what this guy’s up too.
