One guy mercilessly trolled the NHL into creating a better rule book | Weird Rules

  • Roger Neilson manipulated the NHL rulebook so much that he landed in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He changed the sport, not just through these three rule changes, but also by instituting offseason training as well as the idea of studying video to plan for opponents. Who’d have guessed that’d help?

    Rules include…
    1. You can’t put anyone in goal for a penalty shot, it must be the goaltender and they must stay in goal
    2. The goalie cannot leave equipment, such as his stick or even a mound of ice, in front of the goal after he has been pulled
    3. If you intentionally sub too many men onto the ice it results in a penalty shot

My great cousin Bill Durnan, Hall of Fame, Montreal Canadians Goalie, was the reason the NHL they implemented the Durnan Rule, which stated that goalies could not be the captain of the team. He would go and complain to the ref's between whistles, and it gave his team a longer break. Luongo was the first goalie to become captain of a team YEARS later. Bill also had a very wild career. 6 Vezina's, 2 Cups in 7 years of playing. He quit because he didnt like the travel. HA.

Did he really just respond to "did you know that kid who used to use loopholes?" with "yeah definitely" and began to talk about travelling in basketball? How does that make any sense? Just cause they are young doesnt make a perfectly valid rule a loophole.

He was also a really good coach in general, and also was one of the first people to use video as a coaching tool. We think of video as a ubiquitous thing in sports today, but 35 years ago, it was a real innovation.

Rodger Nelson was a legend and a great coach. And was a great teacher of hockey. But he also knew and understood the rules better than the people writing them. They are known throughout the NHL is the Rodger Neilson rules. There is even one time during a game as the refereeing was absolutely terrible he was coaching the Canucks at the time and he was so pissed off that he grabbed a hockey stick stuck a white towel on the end of it and waved it in surrender. And that's how the white towel waving in the playoffs was started in Vancouver. There is actually a statue outside of the Arena in Vancouver to commemorate that moment and what a great man in Coach he was.

Why does it feel like the NFL will start making Bill rules like 4 O-Line and a WR stays on the line and doesn’t run a route, this happened.
I can see Bill tell a water boy start building a10ft snowman! Why? We putting him in their for Field Goal Block! Or Tom ask why do we have a Baboon at Line Backer? We can have 11 players on the field nothing about a trained animal blitzing the QB though.

If you are going to mention Roger Neilson, then you have to also say that he was the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs for no other purpose than stating this important fact; otherwise, this video, although historically accurate, becomes hollow. Good for you @McJohnson.

This video is funny and informative, but doesn't even come close to encapsulating Roger Nielson's legacy (nor does it intend to, granted, but I feel it's worth mentioning).

As was alluded to, he was a very innovative coach. It wasn't just the training in the offseason, as was mentioned, he was one of if not the first coach to use video as a tool for coaching. (He also inadvertently started a tradition when he was Vancouver's coach. He felt ripped off by the refs during a playoff game and put a white cloth on top of a stick, raising it in the air. Canucks fans and other team's fans eventually copied this and started waving white towels as a show of support for their teams.)

But he was also beloved. They have a street named after him in Ottawa, where he was an assistant coach and where he died. They also have a school and a palliative care centre named after him in Ottawa.

Unfortunately, he never won the Stanley Cup. He deserved it just about as much as anyone in hockey who never did win, He came close one year in Vancouver and lost to a dominant Islanders team in the Final. I wish he stayed with the New York Rangers for one more year, where I'm sure he would have won with the team he would have had in 1994.
