I work for a company in Belgium specialized in CGI / render . And All a can say about thoses bad cgi scene is the light is ruining the 3d model. The light is the key in 3D rendering ! http://i.imgur.com/1Golhyn.png

Just take a look at this kind of 3D render (yes all is in 3D), https://www.artstation.com/artwork/mGbny
the light is making all the realism in that scene, not the models or the materials. Light and color grading at the best :) !

Not just CGI most movies looked better in the 90’s. There’s a screen door effect that romanticizes the look of many older movies

Totally agree. Raytracing is important... case in point of how not to do it, Indiana Jones and the crystal skull tree-chopping car in the jungle scenes.... dear gods :(

It goes like this. If you see John, the painter, painting a perfect shape, then you see Mark, another painter, painting a not so good shape, you should not say "painting is getting worse nowadays".
you should only say "John is better"

CGI is like mc Donalds, as long as people buy it they won’t make it as good as possible

The way I view good and bad cgi is if the cgi character or setting looks like it belongs in the movie, then I don’t care if it’s cgi, if it doesn’t, then I will care.
For example for 2005 King Kong and 2007 transformers, I know that there is no such thing as a giant ape or a giant alien vehicle transforming robots, so I can always tell that it’s cgi. But as long as the way it looks, feels, and interacts with everything looks like it belongs in the movie, then I don’t care that it’s cgi

To this date there’s no movie that has better Cgi than Transformers 3, not even the 4 or 5 are better than it, its so beautiful the way they created the final battle, i literally tought they had to blow a real building when the building fell in Chicago, new movies even transformers 4 look like a damn videogame, it looks so cartoonish, also avengers infinity war or endgame, when thanos comes out i think im seeing a videogame cutscene of how shitty he looks

Alita Battle Angel looked incredible one of the best looking movies in my opinion. The problem with that movie that it is sort of badly written, story is not exciting enough. There better be a sequel

I would say Theory #2 is close to the truth. I think the movie makers use so much CGI that the animators can't possibly make the result pefect within the time they're given.

As many people who criticize CG in movies you also mix CG that is actually good but shows something that is obviously unreal and say it's bad because you don't believe it. Yeah, not many people can form a helmet on their face from molten steel with fingers - fake! bad CGI!

I agree. I'd add that motion is often too fast and camera positions impossible. Contrast is often low these days too, everything has to be in a fog for some reason.

Combination of hiring cheaper staff, tighter deadlines and possibly template driven rendering and environments so as to cut down on time. You get a 'standard template setting' that shows as opposed to someone who knows what they're doing and takes the time to do it, etc...

For black panther the problem was that the cgi team was given the movie late and they had only a month to do all suit scenes (barely any time for cgi teams to work) but in capitan America civil war everything was on schedule so they had time to make everything!

I agree. The reason that most of the movies filming in a studio, was to save the expences to film into real world locations. But Hobbit for instance, was cost a lot more money than Lord Of The Rings. So this leave us that filming industry doesn't leave much time to the CGI artists and filmmakers to complete their work as it should be. And this happens because 1: they save money and time and 2: very few people actually cares if the CGI is realistic or not rather to see a raw spectacle of action. I have no problem with CGI, but in some cases, the truth is that CGI are rediculously bad! Hobbit was unfortunately one of them, DC superheroe movies also (Man Of Steel, Batman Vs Superman, Justice Leage, Aquaman), and the list goes on adn on...

About 20 minutes ago I watched Alita for the first time, and absolutely loved it. The only CGI part I hated (no spoilers) was the woman in the red cloak. Oddly, I think Alita is more attractive than Rosa is IRL hahahah!
