The worst NFL coaching decision was so bad, a turnover would've been better

Eh...this is *far* from being the worst coaching decision in NFL history. Sure, the odds were very decent that they would have scored the touchdown, and if it were up to me, I would have gone for the go-ahead score. But you have to look at it from the perspective of the Falcons, in which they were facing a pretty awful 49ers offense that season. Get the almost guaranteed 3 points, kick it off...the Falcons still had 2 time outs and the 2 minute warning to stop the clock at that point...dare the inept 49ers offense to get a first down. Stop them from getting the first down, and then they would have had about 1:45 or so to drive down the field and kick the winning field goal.

Of course, it didn't go down that way, as the 49ers did indeed get a first down to win the game.

Dan Quinn isn’t a good head coach, you can’t change my mind.

Quinn always gets so much hate over at the falcoholic. After watching this video it all makes sense.

I think the worst coaching decision belongs to Carroll choosing to throw it at the goal line instead of running it in SB 49 Lol. Dumbass Seahawks 😂😂

You know...I actually guessed it would be this game. Quinn continues to make baffling decisions to this day, including punting from near midfield while down 16 in the fourth quarter a couple weeks ago.

I will preface this by saying that I would have gone for it on the one. BUT, there is a line of thinking where any result other than the falcons scoring a TD from the one forces the falcons to get a stop on defense. If you kick the fg, as they did, then your defense still has to get a stop, but all you need is a field goal. It is easier to pick up, say 50 yards- from the falcons 30ish into field goal range- than it is to pick up 50ish yards if they fail the 4th down conversion or as you said, take a knee at the one.
I wouldn't say kicking the field goal on the one is a good decision, I personally hate the decision. But definitely not the worst coaching decision.

Using win prob as the genesis of the argument is weak. win prob in football has by far the greatest margin of error. There is too many factors and too small sample size in comparison to basketball and baseball.

I don't know. Deciding to go for a touchdown instead of the winning field goal in the 2017 Super Bowl by, you guessed it the Loserville Falcons, HAS to rank pretty high.

Any 4th and 1 in the last 3 minutes is probably a 'must go for it', and anything inside the 25 is literally a no risk 'go for it' because after the field goal the other team will likely get a touchback and bring it out to the 25, so the TO just improves your field position.

Coaches dont know the real time odds of winning in the moment; that's nonsense. You also dont know how reliable those calculated odds actually are since they arent based on some well defined math but just historical NFL situations. The sample sizes vary wildly. Like to know what the odds are that a team wins after opting to kick a field goal from the 1 yard line down 4 with 3:33 remaining are based on the outcome in games with similar situations, and if you can actually claim that this one instance is THE worst call, then I dont buy that there is a sample to compare it to. The winning odds are mostly entertainment. They dont take anything other than score, time and position into account.

Basically, the odds of winning with 3:33 left and your opponent has the ball on their own 1 yard line down by 4 are greater than if your opponent has the ball with 3:33 left on their own 25 down by 1. No other factors are taken into account and you have no idea of the relative sample sizes. The odds dont make much sense, and it's probably because the sample size of the former is very small. It is a FAR more unique situation so it's not out of the question that those odds are skewed due to a low sample size.

                                                                  • C Owens

It was a defensive slugfest with a lot of wind that day. It was a field position game and he played for field position in overtime. If the Lions go three and out, then the bears win anyway but if the Lions defense did what they did for most of the game, then they likely give the offense better field position. Still the incorrect call but it is completely defensible.

Bruh, I can't agree. This decision wasn't totally illogical. They did close the gap and had two timeouts and the two minute warning. Had they gotten the ball back they would have stood a fair chance to kick the game winning FG. Compare that to the Belichick decision to go for it on 4th and 17 instead of kick a 47 yard field goal in good weather conditions in the 2008 Super Bowl. Bruh, that was a Super Bowl that they lost by 3 points after idiotically deciding to throw the ball out the back of the end zone on 4th down. The decision literally made no sense at all. They even had a great FG kicker (Gostkowski). Surely this inexplicable decision was worse than the Falcon's coach made. But speaking of the Falcons...Shanahan's decision to throw in the Patriots/Falcons Super Bowl instead of run and attempt the game-winning field goal is also worse. They incurred a holding penalty and got taken out of FG range. Hard to explain that one. (They, too, had a great FG kicker.)
