Why would you leave the earth to live in a pressurised self contained habitat when you can just do that on Earth, even if we did somehow catastrophically destroy the environment in the scenario you give?

The cost is worth it and it's better than wasting the money for a useless war on Iran.

We should’ve been delivering infrastructure to the moon or it’s orbit every year so that when we leave to go there it’s ready to go/land

You could cut this price by over 90% by using a few extra Falcon Heavies, then assembling stuff together in orbit before going to the moon.

The US is spending hundreds of billions on military. Those 36 billion would be a fraction of that.

No one has been on the moon. Currently, people cannot survive leaving low earth orbit. Money is not an issue. Money is printed at will. This is why inflation is such a problem. Check out the US National Debt Clock. But, go ahead and believe your government scientists. When has a government agency ever lied???

You can't ask some 7.5 billion people to drop a system for one that ~350 million use. If anyone's dropping a measurement system, it's the US. And in some capacity, they already have.

Is there a mistake (0:58)? Because 12500$ per pound times 159 pounds is 1987500, but 5700$ per kg times 72kg is 410400$. It is a mistake because 1lb is about 0.453kg.

Other than the potential for helium-3, is there a significance to being on the moon? Why not a mega-structure in (preferably earth) orbit? Seems like that scales better than colonizing the lunar surface. To be safe from an extinction event on earth, we only need to live in space, which possibly means only investing in getting people and material into space, as we do now. That puts many nations in play, as it's way more feasible to put a rocket in orbit than send one to the moon. And we need all the help we can get. Even as technology improves, I think lunar colonization would remain incredibly slow and costly. I'd use the moon as a test bed and take the shot at mars.

Why spend an astronomical amount of money to live on another planet when it would be way easier and cheaper to take care of the environment we already have? If anything I believe it's just shitty to want to exploit this planet for all its worth and then go on the next planet to do the same thing and repeat the cycle. At least to me this shows how shitty humans can be.

I did some researching and Jeff Bezos makes $1,000 a second, that means $60,000 per minute, $360,000 per hour and $ 3,153,600,000 a year. That’s just coming from one rich guy. The US GDP is 1930.6 billion dollars in 2017 and it’s military budget is 681.1 billion. So 36 billion is a tiny tiny amount for something like colonizing a celestial body. We need to stop threatening China and start doing something that will make humanity better for the whole.
