Its funny you chose the years 1985-2017. Its not like the NCAA tournament began that year, no that started in 1939. So perhaps you were just selecting those years because that's when the shot clock was introduced. Ok lets roll with that. Now why are we comparing college athletes to professionals? less than 2 percent of college athletes will ever go pro, so are we really going to compare the caliber of teams that don't have a signal pro prospect on there to have the same ability to make play offs as professional teams? that's stupid. lets take NCAA baseball, and to be fair we will start back at its championships inception, in 1947. Now since that time, 81 teams showed up and never won. However, 118 teams never showed up period. Thats out of 299 NCAA Baseball teams, in over 70 years 40% of them have never even shown up. Wow those odds are starting to look very similar to your drought odds as well, I just expanded mine twice as long. But wait, out of all the teams that have shown up and never won, or never shown up 66% are losers. SO yeah why not start making accurate comparisons, college players are and never should be compared to the dynamic of pro teams and their capability to turn things around. I mean, colleges don't have money to pick the best players, or even get to keep most players more than a few years, they are constantly having to turn over a new team, the comparison to pro teams is ridiculous. and what are we just supposed to sit here and take it? I don't think so. Oh and have fun comparing all the different college teams, because guess what their numbers are high too for drought years and everyone gets in at the college level. So suck it... but other than that keep pumping the videos, they are awesome.

You've missed a glaring reason as to why the 8 or 9 gets an easier team in the Sweet 16 than the 4 or 5. Because to get to the Sweet 16, the 8 or 9 has to have BEATEN the no 1 in the round just before, so they will never play the no.1 in the Sweet 16. Look at the statistics for the Field of 32. I haven't seen them, but I can almost guarantee that the 8 or 9 team has the worst winning percentage in that specific round because they always play the no 1 team.

The whole tournament is specifically designed so that the 1-8 seeds make it to the Field of 32 and 5-8 get knocked out, then 1-4 make it to the Sweet 16 and 3-4 get knocked out, etc. Looking at the winning percentage of a certain placed team in one specific round is always going to give you these sorts of statistics.

I think a fairer comparison would've been something like the Champions League in Europe. All UEFA countries get a chance to win the cup, but there is nothing really protecting the parity like in the Big 4 in the US. No salary caps; if you can afford a player, you get that player. Just like in college, you could theoretically get the top recruits and the NCAA would have nothing to say about it (assuming they were recruited legally). The Big 4 have salary caps abd luxury taxes, dissuading teams to pay too much for one player.

Five seed is always an undesirable seed. You often face a quality opponent from a smaller conference who is motivated to make their splash on the tournament in the 12 seed. You often find a pair of 12's upsetting 5's in each tourny. Typically those 5's were also teams who had the potential to be higher seeds at some point but started to fizzle late in the year.

The reason the difficulty chart goes upside down at the end is because of the steepness of the curve between 1 and 3.  You are replacing the 1 or 2 with a 15 or 16 in just one game...after that they're following the easiest paths.

10-12 seeds doing better than the 8-9 seeds in the second round makes sense because the 8-9 has to play a 1 seed. The anomaly is that 10s do better than 7s...but the thing there is that all the 10s that made the second round BEAT A 7, so you could say they were mis-seeded in the first place.

I think you missed an important point. In order for a 8 seed to get in to the sweet sixteen, they have to play a 1 seed to get there, taking the one seed out of the question.

Seed everyone, you can keep that the same, then draw the seeds at random, much like they would for the European Champions League (Soccer/Football) with certain rules, of course, but mostly that no two teams from the same teir can play each other in the first round (so hypothetically, all seed 1 teams could play all the teams seeded 2) from there you could choose to use the bracket, or draw for each round, which ever you prefer, but it just makes a fairer and more interesting comp, because if every sport did it like that, there would be no fairytale stories, Ayax making the semi finals in the 18/19 UCL, wouldn't have happened, Russia doing crazy well in the 2018 world cup wouldn't have happened, and a matriarch of other examples I'm sure people can give me

This type of system is fine, when there's a competition leading to it, like the AFL, each team plays 22 games home and away in a round robin style, to make the finals which works pretty much exactly like this

                                                                    • Natalie Humphries
