The romance was so incredibly painfully intensely cringeworthy. I was sincerely thinking they were joking with that when they first met. Like, i was sure there was gonna be some kind of undercut and this cliche Alladin style pretty boy with badly acted cliche lines was gonna get dropped down by the wayside...

This film was surprisingly decent. I really hope they do a second film to complete the story.

        Captain Marvel was garbage.

I didn't watch this movie to see a sequel later on. Just watched it and was extremely disappointed. Ending was possibly the worst ending I have ever seen, even for a movie with a sequel planned, and absolutely no loose ends were tied up. Just two hours of investment with absolutely no return.

Anime or not, this was just a really good movie.

                Cameron can go fuck himself.
-------> Guillermo del Toro introduced him to the manga in the late ‘90s, Cameron flew to Tokyo to convince Kishiro to sell him rights to the series. The director read Alita’s story as one about adolescence and finding out how one fits into the world, material that his daughter could relate to. He and knew immediately that the book needed to be a film — which doomed any new anime prospects.
Yukito Kishiro sold the rights for Battle Angel to James Cameron in 1998, right after the success of Titanic. The deal included rights to all adaptations — including anime. You only have to imagine the director of the biggest movie of all time coming to your door, begging you to make a movie out of your work, to understand why Kishiro took the deal. (Cameron’s deal allows him to lift from the anime, too: Chiren, played by Jennifer Connelly in the film, and Grewcica, converted into Jackie Earle Haley’s screen character Grewishka, only exist in the OVA.)
Any regrets over the anime likely made the decision to hand the rights to Cameron easier for Kishiro. For his part, the manga author would love to make a TV anime of the series. “Yep. I’ve always wanted to,” he said in conversation with Anime News Network. That decision lays ultimately in the hands of Cameron.

@Shawn Smith, 04:15 "She never loses a fight? SPOILER ALERT; She is literally torn limb from limb and would have died if she wasn't rescued by other characters. In what universe is that not losing a fight?"

You're forgetting one simple fact. Alita had found a better body before this fight takes place. Her "father" denies her use of it. So this means only one thing that we all know. At some point, Alita's current body will be so damaged that her "father" will have no choice, but to use the one she found.

The point of losing a "battle" in terms of characterization is for character development. The character will learn something from the lose (a valuable lesson). However, that isn't what happens. It isn't a true loss because it was put in there as just a convenient way for Alita to be able to use the new body. She learns no lesson from "losing"; it is a "loss" to simply use the better body she found.

So yes, she doesn't lose any fight in the film.

Given the amount of Blu Ray sales (especially out selling Captain Marvel) for this film I'd say most see it as "own it on Blu Ray".

Once you understand what she is, and what she can do, then you can appreciate why she rarely loses a fight. But she does lose fights, like when she was sliced and diced, and she was found in the scrap heap with no limbs, so she isn't invincible like Superman or anything. She's just a bad-ass cyborg, who loves fighting. In the end, a movie has to do one thing, and one thing only: entertain you. So, were you entertained? Yeah, you could find fault and pull it apart, but you can do that with any movie, including Marvel movies. The story was fine to me, and the romance was done well, all though I wouldn't call it a romance, more like a high school crush really. Motorball was amazing. The visuals were incredible, and Mahershala Ali's performance when he was being controlled by Nova, while he was dying, was really cool. Yes, Dr Chiren could have been played by anyone, but we got Jennifer Connelly, and that is not a bad thing. This is the best adaption of an anime that I have ever seen. Give credit where credit is due, Jeremy.

There is a difference between a movie REVIEW and trying to recast, rewrite and redirect a film.

This movie shows why I am a Jeremy Jahns movie review fan. I go to RottenTomatoes and I read the reviews of artsy fartsy movie reviewers that gave this move 1 or 2 stars out of 5 and all I can say is that, they just don't get it. They should not even be reviewing this movie. It was a waste of time for them to sit through even 10 minutes of this movie. I loved the movie from the opening scene. And would say that it is a visual marvel. I believe that the cast elevated this movie and brought life to the manga. As a reader of manga, I really appreciated the visuals. Christoph Waltz really spoke to me in this role, but the first time he appeared on the screen with his hammer, that was awesome. I really as tickled and entertained as each actor, Ali, Haley, Van Dien, Norton, Rodriguez, Fahey, etc., that I have seen in so many other movies appear on the screen as they made each character their own. I loved this movie and I really appreciate this movie review. Jeremy Jahns gets it and knows where this movie is coming from and what it is trying to achieve. I hope that there is a second movie. He is also correct, I wish there was a TV series which would do more justice to the manga in terms of expanding and presenting all of the material that they tried to cram into 2 hours. Thank you Jeremy for reviewing this movie.

I agree with you, I wanted more social and political drama, but still I was quite entertained. She lost a fight and it was heartbreaking. Mario star, lol! I like the dynamics and the emotional growth. I like the end, the berserker became a more mature warrior.

Just saw the movie I will give this movie an A I never read the manga so I can't tell if its fully accurate but I kept that fact in the back of my mind because I know the struggle when that does happen for manga fans of Alita.. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie this is why
                                                              1. It had an anime type feel to the movie, although probably nerfed due to it being live action but I appreciate the effort they put into it to make it as anime as possible, with the fights.
                                                              2. I like alitas character she reminded me of Spiderman when she does the spider stance and he is my favorite superhero all ways has been, and her fights were awesome what far from home should have been.
                                                              3. Set up for a sequel
                                                              1. Well this isn't really a dislike because I understand why Be cause movies aren't as long as series but the developement I felt was a bit fast paced but its understandable.
                                                              2. Was not expecting new blade to die so soon, he seemed like he would be a recurring character
3.Also not really a dislike but Alita is a Mary sue or shes just that idk I never read the comic xD

Let me tell you this..... this movie is fucking garbage. The action scenes are good and the visual of course is good. But the fast pacing and writing of this movie utterly pure garbage

How can one be wrong about their own opinion? I am neither wrong nor right. The correct term is agree or disagree. Not false nor facts. Clearly, you may disagree with my review of the movie, but there are some who do agree.

While she is a strong character, the new (robot) body given by the doctor couldn't have been as strong as shown in the movie. That part didn't make sense, she was making Swiss cheese of people who were designed to kill and she was using some body that wasn't designed for fighting from what I gather. At the very least they should have shown the body getting damaged, then repaired then damaged again after every fight.

Alita was playing out those scenes great, but the bf actor was so stale and plain bad. No charisma.
