I remember when this series was coming out. I was getting sick of X-Men. They haven't came out with anything fresh since Claremont left. Then when Grant came in, I was glued to it which lead straight to the Whedon Cassaday era.

      This run was trash.

Marvels best years are far behind them, and I cannot for the life me understand why their greatest runs of all time aren’t evergreen omnibuses. Jim lee Claremont omnibus would make a mint. Things are so screwed up on the publishing side of marvel comics that I wouldn’t be surprised if they even know that most of their greatest stories and events are out of print.

I just started reading the omnibus of this run, & 3 issues in ... I'm hooked. I love it.

I hate these drawings. The artist may be quite inventive, but I hate that the dimensions are all wrong. The thighs are skinny and no one (especially the women) has any hips! Ugly faces, too.

I love frank quietly’s art, but his difficulty in keeping up with monthly books really shows in new x-men. There are some issues where his figure work is wildly inconsistent with other issues. Over-all, this was my second fav x-men run (claremont is always first).

It’s telling that Marvel doesn’t think they’ve had a seminal x-men run in over 15 years! As mentioned below, Whedon/Cassady’s run is arguably worth including.

Thank you for putting Paul Smith in the pantheon of great X-Men Artists!! I will say this, FOREVER, Paul Smith was the most underrated artist in the history of X-Men.

For a pair of creators who aren’t Marvel based, this is an amazingly generous video.

I hated the art at first. But then I got used to it. There are still pages with terrible looking images of Wolverine for example. But overall the book is great. Jim Lee is still the best X-Men artist though. Why are Claremont and Lee's omnibuses out of print Marvel??? People like me are going to keep asking until you correct your mistake and reprint them.

This came out just as I was getting into reading comics, and while I dug it, I recall it being very controversial at the time. People hated the artwork, especially the way Quitely drew humans and Beast's redesign. Interesting to see a reappraisal. Maybe people always liked it? I just never saw anyone talking much about this run until recently.

@Giovanni DeJesus One of the things I like about comics these days, especially at Marvel, is writers and artists get to be stylistic and do themselves rather than get smoothed out. The downside is probably everyone hates certain runs that just don't work for them.

@Tony Reaves We'll have to agree to disagree. Thanks for the constructive conversation. It was a lot better than Morrison fans that say that I just don't get it, or that I don't know anything about good comics because I don't like his work.

@Giovanni DeJesus I love Quietly but that's fair. I hated when Wolverine jumped into Cyclops' bed at the beginning of Astonishing. I felt like Whedon turned the older X-Men into a bunch of sullen teenagers. Honestly my top 3 for how well they wrote the characters would be Claremont obviously, then Jason Aaron then either Morrison or Gillen.

@Tony Reaves I understand the weird mutants school thing he was doing. He did that more successfully than anyone else. I hate how he wrote the characters. Morrison just ignores how the characters were and just writes what he wants. It's not just the X-Men that he does that with. That's not impressive. Whedon stayed true to the characters and still managed to write exciting stories. The only Morrison story I liked was All-Star superman, and of course that story took place outside of regular continuity. If Morrison wrote a separate X-book like a New Mutants type thing it probably would've been great. And Frank Quietly despite having some of the best compositions and line work in comics, makes everyone look like an 80 year old woman.

@Giovanni DeJesus For one, they fleshed out what it meant to be a mutant. As a kid who was into punk, seeing Quentin Quire with his Magneto was Right shirt being this angry kid under Xavier's roof was awesome. I felt like aside from maybe the Morlocks, you never got to see mutants having a culture. I thought it made Cyclops interesting after a decade of being a douche. Even when he was cheating with Emma, I still liked him more than any time in the 80s. I like how they fleshed out Weapon X and added Fantomex. And the scene where Wolverine gets Scott drunk and drags him along on a mission was one of the best Logan/Scott moments ever. I like how ugly mutants got to be on the team. And he added a ton of interesting new characters.

His Avengers run shoehorned the characters into a story that didn't serve them (and complaining that Brian Mihcael Bendis Bendis didn't do anything with The Ilumanti, rather then understanding Bendis was adding toys to the toy box as well as telling his own story) and was filled with bare contempt for the medium - I'm kind of hoping as with Grant Morrison's run New X-Men (Emma Frost and Scott Summer's relationship) and Batman (Damien Wayne) , they'll be at least some interesting ideas for better writers to work with.

I like Morrison but he didn't get X-Men, and the art was mostly terrible.

Really didn't like the blobby look of this artwork. It put me off reading this series. Felt like it just had this creepy, hopeless, souless kind of vibe to me. Regardless of the storyline xmen always represented hope to me and this series just felt like there was none.
